US job growth slowed down more than expected in December as the retail sector lost 23,000 workers.

Non-farm payrolls rose by 148,000, the Labor Department said – lower than the 228,000 added in November.

Job growth surged in October and November after being held back in September by two hurricanes, although the number of jobs created in both months was revised down by 9,000.

The unemployment rate was steady at a 17-year low of 4.1%.
